The White Horse at Cherhill, is probably one of the best known of the eight, easily accessible Wiltshire White Horses, as it is easily seen from the main A4 road between Calne and Marlborough. It is the second oldest White Horse in Wiltshire, cut in 1780. The earthwork above the horse is Oldbury Castle and the nearby obelisk is known as the Lansdowne Monument, which was erected in 1845 by the 3rd Marquis of Lansdowne, to commemorate his ancestor, Sir William Petty, a physician and surveyor. The monument was restored by the National Trust in 1990.
