Bo Kaap is a residential area in the Cape Malay quarter of Cape Town, South Africa. Bo Kaap is close to the city centre and is tucked into a fold in Signal Hill. Cobble-stoned streets lead through a lively suburb filled with brightly coloured houses from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Many of the inhabitants are descendants of the people from Indonesia (Batavia), Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia, who were captured in the 17th and 18th century and enslaved by the Dutch-East Indian Trading Company. Many were Muslims and others were converted to Islam by the Cape Muslim community.
