Red Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), is sometimes also referred to as the Flanders Poppy, Corn Poppy, Corn Rose, Remembrance Poppy or Red weed. The petals are scarlet, flecked with black at the base, with a single flower on a tall stem. These flowers are considered a weed and grow in field margins, wasteland, roadside verges and places where the ground has been disturbed. Occasionally, whole fields will become a sea of red during the summer months, making a colourful spectacle. The poppies grew in profusion in Flanders in the disturbed earth of the battlefields and cemeteries, where war casualties were buried and thus became a symbol of Remembrance Day. A shallow depth of field provides a diffused red background.
