The African Wild Cat (Felis lybica) males have a shoulder height of about 35 cm (13.8 in) and a mass of 5.1 kg (11.2 lbs). Females are about the same size as the male, but are generally lighter, having a mass of about 4.2 Kg (9.3 lbs). The African Wild Cat eats mice, rats and other small mammals. If available, it also eats birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The black-tipped tail is a distinctive characteristic. Although widespread throughout Southern Africa, they are secretive creatures and are rarely seen. The African Wild Cat is mainly active during the night and twilight although this beautiful animal was seen in the middle of the afternoon.
